WPL 2025: Mumbai Indians Secure First Win with Dominant Performance Against Gujarat Giants

The Mumbai Indians (MI) finally got their first win of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025, defeating Gujarat Giants (GG) by five wickets in Vadodara on Tuesday. With a solid all-round display led by Nat Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews, MI ensured their dominance over Gujarat, maintaining a flawless 5-0 record against them in the tournament’s history.

Matthews Shines as MI’s Bowling Unit Dominates

Winning the toss, Mumbai’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur opted to field first, a decision that paid off brilliantly. The MI bowlers came out all guns blazing, dismantling Gujarat’s top order within the powerplay. GG found themselves in deep trouble at 28/4 after six overs.

Harleen Deol was the lone fighter for Gujarat, managing a respectable 32 runs, while Kashvee Gautam contributed some crucial runs at the lower end. However, Mumbai’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Hayley Matthews, who picked up three wickets, ensured Gujarat was restricted to a modest total of 120 runs. MI’s four overseas players collectively grabbed eight wickets, putting up a clinical performance.

Mumbai’s Chase: Sciver-Brunt Leads the Way

Chasing 121, Mumbai had a decent start with Hayley Matthews playing some aggressive shots. Despite a few early hiccups, including the departure of skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, Natalie Sciver-Brunt took charge of the innings. She played a well-balanced knock of 57 off 39 balls, putting MI in a commanding position.

Sciver-Brunt’s crucial partnership with Amelia Kerr (45-run stand) stabilized the innings. Though she missed out on finishing the game herself, Sajana S and young debutant Kamalini G stepped up, with Kamalini hitting a boundary off her first ball. The duo comfortably took MI across the finish line with plenty of deliveries to spare.

    Post-Match Reactions

Hayley Matthews, Player of the Match: Reflecting on her performance, Matthews acknowledged the importance of adapting to conditions and keeping things simple. She admitted that the team was hungry to bounce back after their previous loss and was happy they executed their plans well.

Harmanpreet Kaur, Mumbai Indians Captain: Kaur expressed satisfaction with her team’s disciplined approach, especially in the powerplay, and credited the bowlers for setting up the win. She emphasized the importance of executing strategies consistently to maintain their winning momentum.

Natalie Sciver-Brunt, Star of the Chase: Speaking about her innings, Sciver-Brunt highlighted the importance of striking a balance between aggression and control. She joked about always keeping the non-striker on their toes while emphasizing that the team’s collective mentality is focused on winning rather than individual heroics.

Ash Gardner, Gujarat Giants Captain: Gardner admitted that their batting let them down and recognized the need for improvement in that department. However, she praised the young talents in the squad and took positives from their bowling and fielding efforts.

    Match Summary

    • Gujarat Giants: 120/10 in 19.4 overs (Harleen Deol 32, Hayley Matthews 3/21)
    • Mumbai Indians: 121/5 in 16.1 overs (Natalie Sciver-Brunt 57, Priya Mishra 2/24)
    • Mumbai won by 5 wickets.

Match Report: Gujarat Giants (GG) Vs Mumbai Indians (MI)

Inaugural TATA Women’s Premier League (WPL) champions Mumbai Indians (MI) are off the mark in Season Three. A dominant performance in the field was instrumental in the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side completing a comfortable five-wicket win in Match 5, helping them maintain their unbeaten run against Gujarat Giants (GG) with five wins out of five.

The trio of Hayley Matthews (3-16), Amelia Kerr (2-22), and Natalie Sciver-Brunt (2-26) ensured Mumbai only had to get 121 for victory. Their run-chase was not without hiccups, including Kaur falling early, but a second consecutive half-century from Sciver-Brunt (57 off 39) capped off a special all-round effort from the England star and secured the win with 23 balls to spare.

    Looking Ahead

With this win, Mumbai Indians are up and running in the WPL 2025, while Gujarat faces a tough road ahead with just one win from three matches. The action now shifts to Bengaluru, but before that, UP Warriorz will take on Delhi Capitals in Vadodara on Wednesday, February 19.
