A judge from the Brazil Supreme Court begins looking into Musk
After the multibillionaire announced he would revive accounts on the social media network X, formerly Twitter, that the judge had ordered be disabled, a Brazilian Supreme Court judge launched an investigation into Elon Musk.
As a result of the court order’s unconstitutionality, Mr. Musk announced on the platform that the limits had been lifted.
“Resign or be impeached” was another demand he made of Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
X will be fined 100,000 reais ($19,774; £15,670) every day if it disobeys the decree.
Justice Moraes stated that Mr. Musk had started a disinformation campaign against the Supreme Court in his ruling.
The corporation was not permitted to identify which accounts were impacted, according to the platform’s Global Government Affairs team.
However, Mr. Musk later tweeted, saying, “X will publish everything demanded by [Moraes] and how those requests violate Brazilian law.”
The far-right movements that shared content about the riots on January 8, 2018, when hundreds of supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country’s Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace, are thought to be connected to the profiles.
Following his decisions to impose restrictions on social media platforms throughout the nation, Justice Moraes became well-known.
In addition, he is looking into Mr. Bolsonaro’s and his allies’ possible involvement in a coup attempt.
A video of the meeting between the former president and Mr. Musk in May 2022 was posted on Saturday.
Mr. Bolsonaro also urged his followers to congregate on April 21 a few hours sooner.
Paulo Pimenta, Brazil’s minister of communications, chastised Elon Musk in the meanwhile, writing in bold letters, “Social networks are not a lawless land”.
“We will not allow anyone, regardless of the money and power they have, to affront our homeland,” he stated.
The site may be temporarily suspended if X chooses to defy the decision, according to Bruna Santos, global campaigns manager at nonprofit organization Digital Action.
“Musk acted to provoke the Brazilian judiciary,” she stated. “I think there is a real chance that X might get blocked.”
